בית זית הוא מושב בהרי יהודה, כ-7 ק"מ מערבית לירושלים, וכ-1 ק"מ דרומית למוצא. שייך למועצה אזורית מטה יהודה.

היסטוריה

המושב נוסד בשנת 1949 ואוכלס בעולים מיוגוסלביה וממצרים. הוא נועד לשמש כחלק מפרוזדור ירושלים - סדרת יישובים שהוקמו בתפיסה שגרסה כי יישובים לאורך הציר לירושלים יאבטחו אותו. היישוב נועד להתבסס על חקלאות ולתושבים הוקצו שטחי מטעים וכרם וכן מטילות.

ב-1956 הורחב היישוב עם יחידות של תושבים ותיקים, רובם עובדי סוכנות ומוסדות. כך הוא הפך למושב הגדול ביותר בהרי יהודה.

היישוב הורחב במחצית שנות התשעים בבניה במגרשים לבני המקום באופן שלא יצור הפרדה בין היישוב הוותיק לחדש, כך שהרחבת היישוב בוצעה מסביב ליישוב הוותיק. בני המושב שבנו את ביתם לצד הוריהם שותפים היום לניהול המוניציפלי של היישוב ותרומתם בתחומים אלה בולטת.

בבחירות 2009 בלט שיתוף הפעולה בניהול היישוב בין ועד האגודה החקלאית לוועד המקומי. שיתוף הפעולה והירתמות התושבים הביא לכך שלא התקיימו בחירות לוועד המקומי והוסכם בין הגורמים על רשימה אחת שתנהל את היישוב תוך שיתוף פעולה של כל חברי הוועד.

כלכלה

במהלך השנים נכשלו ענפי החקלאות במושב, עד שרוב האוכלוסייה הפסיקו לעסוק בחקלאות, והיישוב אינו נחשב ישוב חקלאי. תקופת מה פרח במושב ענף הקיט (צימרים), אך עם ירידת כדאיותו פסק גם זה.

בקיץ 2009 ניטעו בשטחי בית זית כ-150 דונם כרם באמצעות אגודת הפלחה האזורית ובשותפות עם יקבי כרמל מזרחי.

עקבות דינוזאורים שהתגלו ביישוב

בשנת 1962 נתגלתה, בחצר המשק של משפחה במושב, שכבת סלע קדומה ובה כ-200 עקבות שזוהו כעקבות דינוזאורים בני כ-120 מיליוני שנים. האתר נחקר על ידי הפלאונטולוג משה אבנימלך. לא ניתן לדעת מה הייתה הצורה המדויקת של הדינוזאור שעבר במקום, אולם ניתן להקיש כמה מאפיינים על מבנה גופו. ייתכן שהעקבות הן של דינוזאורים מסוג סתרותיומימוס ומסוג אלפרוזאורוס. חיות אלו מזכירות בצורתן יען, והן היו בעלת כושר ריצה על שתי רגליים. משקלן היה בין 150 ל-300 ק"ג, גובהן כ-2.4 מטרים, ואורכן כ-4 מטרים. זהו האתר היחידי בישראל ואחד הבודדים בעולם שבו נתגלו עקבות דינוזאורים וחשיבותו מבחינה מדעית גבוהה.

מאגר בית זית

ממערב ליישוב נמצא מאגר בית זית. זהו מאגר שנוצר על ידי סכר בערוץ נחל שורק. אורכו כקילומטר, רחבו עד 70 מטר וצורתו כבננה. עומקו בשיאו כמעט 20 מטר. מצידו המזרחי של המאגר ישנו שביל אופניים ופינות חמד למטיילים.
