המושב הוקם בשנת 1952 על ידי עולים מתוניסיה ומאיראן, שקראו ליישוב תחילה "כפר עבדון". בימיו הראשונים שימש היישוב ככפר עבודה.

המושב קרוי על שם עבדון, אחת מ-48 ערי הלויים שככל הנראה הייתה ממוקמת בקרבת המושב.
