שרקנים
בעל החיים שנקרא באנגלית "חזירגינאה" (Guinea pig), בצרפתית "חזיר הודו" (Cochon d'Inde) ובעברית נקרא בעבר "חזיר ים", אינו חזיר, ומקורו אינו בגינאה, אינו בהודו ובטח שאינו בים. מקורו של יונק זה הוא באזור פרו והוא מסדרת המכרסמים (ולא מסדרת מכפילי הפרסה כמו החזיר). כיום מכונה בעל חיים זה בעברית שַרקָן (בשל הקולות שהוא משמיע) או קַבְיָה (בדומה לשמו המדעי, Cavia porcellus). הקביה הובאה לאירופה על ידי הספרדים עם כיבוש אזור פרו (אז באימפריית האינקה) בשנת 1532. אחד השימושים בה היה גידולה על ספינות, לשם אספקת בשר טרי למלחים במקום בשר חזיר. על כן בגרמנית נקראת הקביה "חזירון-ים מבוית" (Hausmeerschweinchen), ומכאן מקור שמה הקודם בעברית.
