ברי מרטין סיימון (באנגלית: Barry Simon; נולד ב-16 באפריל 1946) הוא פיזיקאי מתמטי אמריקאי ששימש פרופסור למתמטיקה ופיזיקה תאורטית בפרינסטון, וקלטק. ידוע בתרומותיו לתיאוריה הספקטרלית של אופרטורי שרדינגר במכניקה קוונטית. חיבר למעל מ-400 מאמרים במתמטיקה ופיזיקה. עבודתו התפרסה על תחומים רחבים של פיזיקה מתמטית: תורת השדות הקוונטיים, מכניקה סטטיסטית, תנועה בראונית, תורת המטריצות האקראיות, מכניקת קוונטים לא-יחסותית, מערכות מרובות חלקיקים, מכניקה קוונטית לא-יחסותית בשדות חיצוניים, הגבול הקלאסי של מכניקה קוונטית, אופרטורי שרדינגר אקראיים, ופולינומים אורתוגונליים.

ראשית חייו

אמו הייתה מורה בבית ספר, ואביו רואה חשבון. מקור נמשפחה הוא מאודסה וגרודנה. סבו קיבל את השם סיימון באליס איילנד.[1] למד בבית הספר התיכון ג'יימס מדיסון בברוקלין.[2][3] חזר בתשובה בעקבות נישואיו והוא כיום יהודי שומר מצוות.[1] מתגורר לחלופין בלוס-אנגלס ובירושלים.

קריירה

במהלך שנות התיכון למד קורסים באוניברסיטת קולומביה. בשנת 1962 זכה סיימון בתחרות של האגודה האמריקאית למתמטיקה. בגיל 16 התקבל להרווארד והוכתר לעמית פוטנם ב-1965 בגיל 19, סיים תואר ראשון ב-1966, והדוקטורט ב-1970 מאוניברסיטת פרינסטון, בהנחיית ארתור סטרונג וייטמן. עבודת הדוקטורט שלו עסקה במכניקת הקוונטים.[4] לאחר הדוקטורט מונה פרופסור בפרינסטון, בשנות השמונים עבר מפרינסטון לקלטק, ממנה פרש בקיץ 2016.[4][5] חבר הקורטוריון של הטכניון בחיפה.[6]
